I was just logging onto MSN to read some headlines before I eat some lunch and watch Days and caught this story. It is amazing what will offend people. Seriously...this magazine is for women who are having or have had babies. And yet some of them are offended. If you want to read the article on MSN, click here.
Now, I wouldn't consider myself a "lactivist" per se, but I do plan on breastfeeding our baby. Why? Because it is best for baby, mama and it is FREE. I do think that women who breastfeed until the child is beyond diapers is a bit much, but that is just me. I don't know if I would feel comfortable breastfeeding in public myself but I imagine that if covered up discreetly, I could do it. I certainly don't plan on hanging out in the bathroom while the kid is fed. I don't eat in the bathroom and wouldn't make my baby do it. I would consider going to another room in the house if we were visiting friends, mainly because it is a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. But, they also make breast pumps for a reason. I will have one and plan on using it to be prepared for family outings. Unfortunately bottles are more socially acceptable than a boob.
Yep, I will be a cloth diapering, baby wearing, breastfeeding, granola mama. Suits me.
Wish I could get this magazine...off to hunt down a way to subscribe online.

Hell yes, I think that the governement should tax oil profits. And put that tax money into research and development of alternative / sustainable fuel sources. Hah! Who am I kidding, this won't happen anytime soon. Wishful thinking, eh?

I do not have a problem with a mother breastfeeding in public. Most of the moms I have seen are very discreet as a matter of fact I have not seen one mother who is indiscreet. Nothing wrong with breastfeeding up to a certain age. I had to stop after 6 months with my son because I just could not keep up with him. They say the first 3 months are the most important time to breast feed. I think you will be a wonderful Mom!
I wish you luck with breastfeeding! My sister tried with her babies, but ofcourse her nipples wouldnt cooperate and the girls werent getting any milk, so she had to resort to formula. Im sure in all your research you have found that breastfeeding is WONDERFUL for the baby. Great bonding time, and the best nutrients you give!

Missy--first of all hi from another Missy. It's amazing what people find to be outraged about isn't it? Personally I think breastfeeding is beautiful and I don't know why people find it so offensive, oh wait, it's a breast! It's a breast that isn't hidden behind layers of clothes. OMG!!! Earth mothers rule! Cloth diapering, baby wearing, breastfeeding and granola, all good things.
I was a breastfeeding in public Mum and I did the cloth nappies. I had disposable nappies with me as a backup if I was out and about,just in case there was nowhere for me to sit her on my knee, I never used a change table, but 98% of the time it was the cloth ones.
I walked around one store feeding once and nobody noticed what I was doing.
I thought they were trying to encourage more women to breastfeed, instead of discouraging them and making the feel they're doing something wrong.

I nursed our first precious girl up until I was two months shy of giving birth to our second precious daughter :-) She weaned herself. I am still nursing dd2 and it has been such a rewarding and special experience. I am glad to have gone through the initial pain and confusion to have gained all of this. Hope all is well with yours :-)
I wanted to share what cloth diaper we have used and worked well for us. I have been using Mother Ease diapers from www.motherease.com They hardly charge much for shipping and I was able to get them sent to Guam via priority for dd2 as well. I chose the cloth diaper than can be used for a newborn up until they are fairly walking around well. They are fairly bulky on a newborn but eventually shrink with frequent washing at I would say a two to three month period. Also, you might have already read or seen literature on elimination communication. We pottied dd1 mainly with this method since she was a week old and dd2 when she was two days old. DD1 was in panties by one and pottying herself and pulling her panties up and down on her own before she was two. I am still working on dd2 especially with the water and power conditions while we are here in Saipan for a short bit. I hope this helps.
